The loss of the freight and passenger steamer Waubuno with everyone on board in November 1879 is one of the most notorious nautical disasters on the Great Lakes. Canadian historian Douglas Hunter has spent sixteen years (and counting) researching the lives of those lost and the mystery of why the steamer failed to complete a passage from Collingwood to Parry Sound. In this talk based on his new book Frightful Disaster!, Hunter shares many of his findings and takes us into two sensational trials arising from a lawsuit against the vessel’s owners by a widow of one of the victims. He also presents intriguing findings from the two sites containing Waubuno wreckage, which he began documenting last summer.
